Prenatal Musculoskeletal Injuries Mooroolbark

Prenatal Musculoskeletal Injuries

Pregnancy is a time of profound change for a woman’s body, bringing both joy and physical challenges. As your body adapts to support the growing life within, it’s common to experience musculoskeletal discomfort and injuries.

Common Postnatal Musculoskeletal Discomfort & Injuries

These can include:

  • Lower Back Pain: As your baby grows, the added weight and shift in your center of gravity can strain the lower back.
  • Pelvic Girdle Pain: Hormonal changes can loosen the ligaments in your pelvis, causing pain and instability.
  • Sciatica: The expanding uterus may press on the sciatic nerve, leading to pain that radiates down the leg.
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Fluid retention can increase pressure on the median nerve in your wrist, causing pain and numbness.

Addressing Prenatal Musculoskeletal Injuries

At Pelvic Strength Physiotherapy, we offer specialised care to help manage and alleviate these prenatal musculoskeletal injuries.

Our approach includes:

  • Gentle Exercise Programs: Tailored to your needs, these exercises strengthen the muscles supporting your back and pelvis, improving stability and reducing pain.
  • Manual Therapy: Our skilled therapists use gentle techniques to relieve pain and improve function.
  • Education and Support: We provide guidance on proper posture, safe lifting techniques, and ergonomics to help you manage your symptoms and prevent further injury.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are musculoskeletal injuries?

Musculoskeletal injuries involve damage to the muscles, bones, joints, tendons, or ligaments. They can occur suddenly due to trauma or develop gradually from repetitive stress or overuse. Common types of musculoskeletal injuries include sprains, strains, fractures, tendinitis, bursitis, and dislocations.

What causes musculoskeletal injuries?

Musculoskeletal injuries can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

  • Trauma from falls, car accidents, or sports injuries.
  • Overuse or repetitive movements, such as typing, lifting, or running.
  • Poor posture that strains muscles and joints over time.
  • Age-related changes like osteoarthritis.
  • Inadequate physical conditioning or improper warm-up before activities.
What are the symptoms of musculoskeletal injuries?

Symptoms of musculoskeletal injuries can vary but often include:

  • Pain ranging from mild to severe.
  • Swelling and inflammation.
  • Stiffness and limited range of motion.
  • Bruising and discolouration of the skin.
  • Weakness or instability in the affected area.
How are musculoskeletal injuries diagnosed?

Diagnosis typically involves a comprehensive physical examination and medical history review. Advanced diagnostic tools such as X-rays, MRI scans, and ultrasound may be used to accurately assess the extent of the injury and identify the affected tissues.

What treatment options are available for musculoskeletal injuries?

Treatment aims to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, restore function, and prevent further injury. Common treatment options include:

  • Rest and avoiding aggravating activities.
  • Ice and heat therapy to manage pain and swelling.
  • Medications such as pain relievers and anti-inflammatories.
  • Physical therapy with customised exercise programs and manual therapy.
  • Bracing or splinting to immobilise and protect the injured area.
  • In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to repair damaged tissues.
Can musculoskeletal injuries be prevented?

While not all injuries can be prevented, there are steps you can take to reduce the risk:

  • Stay active with regular exercise to maintain strength and flexibility.
  • Warm up and cool down properly before and after physical activities.
  • Use proper technique in activities like lifting, running, or typing.
  • Maintain good posture to avoid unnecessary stress on muscles and joints.
  • Listen to your body and avoid pushing through pain.
How long does it take to recover from a musculoskeletal injury?

You should seek medical attention if you experience:

  • Severe pain or swelling that doesn’t improve with rest and home treatment.
  • Inability to move the affected area.
  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness.
  • Visible deformity or abnormal positioning of a bone or joint.
  • Persistent symptoms that interfere with daily activities.
