How We Help Treat Mastitis
Mastitis is a common and often painful condition that can affect breastfeeding mothers, particularly in the early weeks postpartum. It occurs when breast tissue becomes inflamed, sometimes due to a blocked milk duct or infection.
Common symptoms of mastitis include breast pain, swelling, warmth, redness, and flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, and fatigue. Early recognition and treatment are important to prevent the condition from worsening.
At Pelvic Strength Physiotherapy, we understand how challenging mastitis can be—especially while caring for a newborn. Physiotherapy can assist with gentle techniques to help relieve blocked ducts, improve milk flow, and reduce discomfort. We also provide guidance on optimal breastfeeding positioning and strategies to help prevent recurrence.
If you’re experiencing symptoms of mastitis, seeking support early can make a significant difference in your recovery and overall wellbeing.

What Is Mastitis?
Mastitis is the inflammation of blocked milk ducts in the breast. It may occur with or without infection and is commonly experienced during breastfeeding, particularly in the early weeks.
This condition can be extremely painful and distressing, often making feeding more difficult at a time when support is most needed.
Common Signs of Mastitis
You may be experiencing mastitis if you notice:
- Breast pain or tenderness
- Localised redness or warmth
- Swelling or hardness in the breast
- Flu-like symptoms (fever, body aches, fatigue)
- Pain during breastfeeding
Early treatment is important to reduce discomfort and prevent symptoms from worsening.
